CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“That went better than expected,” Baor said, looking at the devastation that lay around the team.

They had walked down a number of passages filled with traps and stumbled into a large room where another brute ambushed them. The problem was that it brought zombie friends, forcing the team into a frenzied fight that nearly killed Thebs. Some amazing last-minute healing from Seris and Pan’s expert shooting had allowed them to squeak by, but the entire team was shaken by how close a call it had been.

“I’m sorry, that was my fault,” Jasper said, hanging her head. “I was so eager to be done with the traps that I missed the brute.”

“I don’t think you could have seen it,” Alph said, causing everyone to look over at him.

Pointing to the wall where a plate had slid aside to reveal a small room, he walked over.

“The brute came out of here, at least a minute after the zombies.”

“It must have been roaming,” Seris said, nodding. “No way to predict when a roaming monster will arrive. We’ll just need to be more vigilant in the future.”

Walking up next to Jasper, Baor patted her on the shoulder.

“Seris and Alph are right. We’ll just keep a better eye out going forward. It looks like this passage opens up another way. Do we want to explore it or keep heading for our objective?”

“I vote we explore it,” Horace said, looking around at everyone else.

“I’ll follow whatever the team decides,” Quayly said.

Still resting, Thebs just shrugged, so Baor looked at Alph, who was peering into the small room.

“Alph? Hey, Alph.”

Frowning, Baor was about to reach out for him when Alph took a step forward and crouched, staring at something on the door. Unsure what he was looking at, Baor crouched down next to him as Alph took out a pair of tweezers and picked up something practically invisible and held it up.

“Hey, look. It’s a spider thread. This is a crypt spider thread. Hold on, let me collect it. This is one of the ingredients I need for my Journeyman potion.”

Jumping to his feet, Baor looked at the room in front of them warily. Crypt spiders were known for their incredibly strong and sharp thread. It was close to clear, making it impossible to see in a dark dungeon environment, and as a result, crypt spiders were one of the worst enemies to run into in a dungeon. The only saving grace was that only small, immature crypt spiders could weave the thread, meaning they weren’t dealing with giant crypt spiders like they had outside.

“Crypt spider thread?”

“Yeah, that brute must have broken it as he walked past. Hold on, there are still threads floating in the air. If you brush them they’ll cut you. Worse, blood transforms them into a really strong glue, which is how they wrap up their prey.”

Reaching out with his tweezers, Alph casually caught some of the wayward strands and put them in the glass vial he was using to store them.
